Green Man Pages - Other Locations
On this page are Green Men in towns where either there are not enough to warrant a separate page or I have not yet done a complete search of the town. I am very grateful to my 'Green Man hunter' contact, Monika Bunte and to my enthusiastic colleagues for their photos and information on Green Men that they have found in Germany. If you have found any Green Men in Germany, I would be most grateful for photos and information. Please email me at: ![]()

Koenigslutter. I wonder if this is not a Green Man but rather a Hydrus. Stories about the Hydrus can be found in the Bestiaries. It represents Christ's victory over evil and is often seen on fonts as a symbol of salvations. Could the hares savaging a woman in the carving above also have Hydruses coming out of their mouths. The hard is a well documented symbol of lust and lascivious nature. Perhaps the Hydrus is trying to purify lust in this carving. Compare this to the very similar, though cruder carving in Nuernburg

Soest Marienkirche. Below archway on main entrance.

Soest Marienkirche. Photo by Matthias Bunte. Monika calls this carving a Green Man. Certainly he has foliage, but I think this carving, especially as it is on the outside of the church, is probably an exhibitionist figure. (Known as Sheena-na-giigs when they are female.) See the excellent website ' Satan in the groin' for more information

Lübeck. Marienkirche. Photo by Roy Parrish. Here is a relief representation of the Wildwose carrying a plaque displaying trees. He is surrounded by foliage, which sprouts from his head.
